Forbes “142 million Masters revenues, but it could have been more”

Cucchi, Salvini:

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 12 – According to a report by “Forbes”, The Masters in 2022 generated revenues of 142 million dollars, but could do much more. Just think that the US Open, another men’s golf major, could produce 160,000,000 in earnings this year. Compared to 2021, Augusta National has increased the prize pool of the Masters Tournament, from 11,500,000 last year to 15,000,000 this edition, of which 2,700,000 went to the winner, Scottie Scheffler.

In fact, by choice, the tournament has only six sponsors and part of that money, for Forbes, goes to the media partners, CBS and ESPN, to cover the production costs of the tournament. And if the US Open raises 93 million just for what concerns the national TV rights, the Masters on this item, in North America, does not collect anything. Since the agreements with CBS and ESPN allow Augusta National complete control of the broadcast of the event in exchange for no compensation. It is a precise choice of the (private) Club, among the most exclusive in the world, which also seems to satisfy the intention of the members. In fact, for Forbes, “if Augusta National decided to open up more to sponsors and TV, the tournament could generate 269 million more in revenues”. (HANDLE).
