Algeria: trial of Madjer, ‘Allah’s heel’ postponed

(ANSA) – ALGIERS, MAY 12 – The court of Algiers today postponed the trial for corruption charges against the former footballer Rabah Madjer, winner of the Champions Cup with Porto in 1987 thanks to his heel goal against Bayern Munich, which earned him the nickname “Allah’s Heel”.

According to the official Algerian news agency (APS), the former striker from Algeria and Porto will be tried on May 26, indicating that the national agency for publishing and advertising has filed a civil action against the former footballer.

According to the same source, Rabah Madjer footballer, and later coach of the Algerian national team, had illegally benefited from advertising by the Algerian Agency for Publishing and Advertising (a government body responsible for the distribution of advertisements in newspapers), together with one of his partners in the newspaper Al-Balagh (‘The Announcement’), which he owned during the time the country was headed by the late Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Rabah Madjer is being prosecuted against the background of alleged charges of fraud, identity theft, misrepresentation and forgery.

Madjer is known for his famous heel goal for Porto in the 1987 European Cup final, which earned him the nickname “The Heel of Allah”. With the national team in 1990 Madjer had then won the African Cup organized by Algeria.
