The plan works – Füchse also win against Erlangen

This is how the foxes had imagined it. First Fabian Wiede stole the ball from his opponent, then he sent his left winger Tim Matthes on a trip, who safely converted the counter-attack. It was scenes like this that secured the Berliners a 35:30 (20:16) victory in the Bundesliga game against HC Erlangen on Sunday.

But it wasn’t quite as clear as the result suggests. The guests started with a lot of energy and impressed with the quality of their finals in the back room. But not only the offensive caused problems, the Franks also had a lot to offer in front of their own goal. The jersey was pulled, the physical contact was savored to the limits of what is legal – and sometimes beyond. Every Berlin hit had to be worked out hard.

Fabian Wiede caused a moment of shock when he hit the ground after a duel and held his, recently injured, left shoulder with his face contorted with pain. Wiede got up again and – fortunately for his team – did not suffer any major damage.

Because it was he who brought the foxes into play. Be it through a pass via a lift to the circle, the precisely timed play on the outside, his own goal danger or through his anticipatory defense work already mentioned.

“We found a lot of good solutions on the offensive and can’t really blame ourselves today,” said Wiede. Once again he and his side men managed to create spaces, isolate individual players and let the ball run quickly.

The plan to stop Berlin’s individual talent, which Erlangen’s trainer Michael Haaß had issued before the encounter, could not be implemented, however. Especially since not only Wiede came up with a lot of quality. The veteran Hans Lindberg added seven goals to his account, and Matthes was just as successful on the other side.

It was particularly noticeable that Berlin’s trainer Jaron Siewert’s concept works. If the defensive is correct, counter-attacks are generated and the pace increased. This is currently the key to success, which has already given the Füchsen the seventh win of the season.
