(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 15 – “Excellent news”: this is how the number one tennis player in the Russian world, Daniil Medvedev, defined the news that Russian and Belarusian players will be able to participate in this year’s US Open.
Medvedev will therefore be able to defend his title: he and his compatriots, along with tennis players from Belarus, have instead been excluded from Wimbledon, due to the invasion of Ukraine. At the US Open, on the other hand, the players of the two nations will be able to participate, competing under neutral flags. “I am happy to be able to defend my title. I have fantastic memories of last year – said Medvedev – it was one of the most special tournaments for me”. The Russian tennis player took his first major title last September with the victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the US Open.
