Football: here are Azzurri for Euro U.19, stop clubs in Gnonto and Scalvini

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 16 – The European adventure for the Under 19 national team begins. The Italian coach Carmine Nunziata has made official the list of 20 players who will participate in the final phase of the European category. The squad does not include Wilfried Gnonto and Giorgio Scalvini, veterans of the commitment to the senior national team in the Nations League. Despite “the appreciated availability expressed by the players – emphasizes the FIGC in a note -, in fact, the clubs to which they belong (Zurich and Atalanta) have highlighted some critical issues with respect to the call for the competition, which takes place on a date outside of those indicated by Fifa, for the release of players from clubs to national teams. The FIGC, respecting what is represented by the clubs, decided not to include them in the squad list “. Meanwhile, the Azzurrini have reached Samorin, a Slovak town 25 km from Bratislava, where they will stay for the duration of the tournament. Italy, included in group A, will start on 18 June against Romania; second match on 21st against the hosts of Slovakia and, last but not least, France on 24th June.

Group B is made up of England, Israel, Austria and Serbia: the first two places in the two groups will guarantee access to the semi-finals that will be played on Tuesday 28 June. This edition of the European Championship also qualifies for the Fifa Under 20 World Cup, scheduled for next year in Indonesia: 5 places are allocated to Uefa, therefore the 4 semifinalists plus the fifth team from the playoffs (played on the same day as the semifinals) among the third classified in the two groups, they will win the right to participate in the next Under 20 World Cup.

Coach Carmine Nunziata does not hide the difficulties of the tournament (“at this level all the teams hide pitfalls”) and spoke of Gonto and Scalvini: “They are two guys who started the season with us and gave their contribution so that the team qualify for this final phase. I’m sorry and it is normal that we would have liked to have them with us but I am happy for their progress: I consider this a success for our group that works for the major national teams. ” (HANDLE).
