(ANSA-AFP) – WASHINGTON, 11 JUL – Former Manchester United and England national team star Wayne Rooney will return to Major League Soccer (MLS) to coach Dc United, where he also played between 2018 and 2019 This is revealed by ESPN and the sports site The Athletic. Rooney, 36, landed yesterday at Washington airport and is now waiting for a work visa to be announced as the new coach, replacing Argentine Hernán Losada, sacked after Matchday 6 of the current season, due to poor results . Dc United are currently next to last in the Eastern Conference, with 17 points from 17 games. The Washington side lost 7-0 to Philadelphia Union on Friday. Rooney left his position as manager of Derby County at the end of June (his first as a manager) concluded by a relegation to League One: the club was penalized by the 21 who were removed from him in the standings due to economic problems. The Derby however managed to close with a positive balance of 34 points, 7 points behind Reading, the first not relegated. The former England captain joined Derby County as a player in 2020, after leaving DC United, where he had scored 23 goals in 48 games, spread over the two seasons 2018 and 2019. In a 13-year career at Manchester United, Rooney has scored 183 goals and won the Premier League five times, as well as a Champions League in 2008, the third in the history of the ‘Red Devils’.
