Cycling: Astana reintegrates Colombian Lopez into the team

(ANSA) – MADRID, 01 AUG – The Astana cycling team announced on Monday the lifting of the suspension of its climber, the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez, a measure adopted after the rider’s luggage was checked by the Spanish police at the airport in Madrid on 22 July.

In a statement, the Kazakh team underlines “that in the absence of elements found by the Spanish authorities or the International Cycling Union (UCI)”, it is “not in a position to continue this suspension which deprives the rider of his contractual rights”. “Miguel Angel Lopez is therefore temporarily reinstated” in the Astana team and will resume his racing program, starting with the Tour de Burgos and the Vuelta.

“It was a routine check, as in the case of any other passenger” explained the Guardia Civil on 22 July, adding that the cyclist “is not being investigated”. The Spanish website Ciclo21 had instead claimed that Lopez had been arrested as part of the open investigation for drug trafficking and money laundering. (HANDLE).
