(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 17 – The International Cycling Union has disqualified Nairo Quintana from the general classification of the cycling Tour de France. The Colombian climber, winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2014, was placed in sixth place, with a delay of 16’33 “from the yellow jersey, the Danish Jonas Vingegaard. Quintana was sanctioned for – according to a statement – “having violated the ban on the use of Tramadol in competitions, provided for by the UCI medical regulations with the aim of protecting the safety and health of runners in light of the side effects of this substance”.
Analysis of two dried blood samples, provided by the rider on 8 and 13 July, during the 2022 Tour de France, revealed the presence of Tramadol and its two main metabolites.
In accordance with UCI medical rules, therefore, the rider was disqualified from the Tour de France 2022. The decision can be challenged before the Arbitral Tribunal of Sport within the next 10 days. (HANDLE).
