Pele: crown and throne on the pitch, this is how Santos remembers O Rei

For the first time Santos returned to the field after the death of its eternal symbol, O Rei Pelé. THE SPECIALYesterday evening the team in complete white clothing faced Mirassol for the Paulista championship, whose players for the occasion wore a shirt like that of the Seleçao, yellow with green edges and which had the name ‘Pelè’ on the back of each jacket.

Before the match, various images of Pele’s career were projected onto the Vila Belmiro pitch in an evocative play of lights, including the famous celebration after the goal in the Mexico 1970 final, then a throne was placed on the circle of midfield, and some of O Rei’s teammates carried a huge papier-mâché crown onto the pitch, heading right towards the throne to crown that No.10 who will never be forgotten. Some Santos players, in turn, played with a white band in their hair with the inscription “Eternal Pele”. On the back of each shirt, under the number, “Obrigado Rei” was written in Portuguese or other languages.
In the end Santos won 2-1, led by the new signing Istvan Mendoza, a Colombian striker who played with a shirt with the number 20, the sign of the division and then a 2. As if to say that the result was 10, and also this was a tribute to O Rei Pelé.
