Euro 2024: “Of course” that the competition is “an objective” for the Blues, says Deschamps

On the occasion of the friendly match between France and Germany in preparation for Euro 2024, the Blues coach Didier Deschamps gave an exceptional interview to Europe 1. The tactician spoke of his objective of winning this competition, which is will take place across the Rhine this summer.

These are the last rehearsals before the big day. Before facing Chile on March 26, the French football team challenges Germany, host of the next Euro, this Saturday evening in Lyon. Two friendly matches which should allow Didier Deschamps to find the right settings before the big summer competition across the Rhine. And before this meeting, the coach of the Blues shared his determination at the microphone of Europe 1.

Winner of the World Cup in 2018 and the Nations League in 2021, the tactician is still looking to win the Euro, the only title that has eluded him since his appointment as head of the France team in 2012. I have a lot of things, and so much the better. I’m doing everything to get there. That (the Euro) is a goal, of course,” says Didier Deschamps.

“Don’t skip steps”, supports Didier Deschamps

“From what we have achieved, that the French team is one of the favorites for this Euro, that seems logical to me,” agrees the coach, who wants to warn: “There is no point in thinking about already be in the final (…). There will be steps to take, so we must not skip them of course.”

Didier Deschamps refers to the group stage of the Blues, which for the moment contains an unknown: the last team in Pool D (France, Netherlands, Austria) is a play-off nation, whose identity will be known at the start next week. It will be Poland or Wales, who will compete on Tuesday for the last ticket to join the Blues group.

Austria, the Netherlands and a play-off player in the Blues group

In any case, the coach will be keen to turn the page on a disappointing last European campaign, concluded with a sad elimination in the round of 16 against Switzerland. “The ambition must be there, the determination obviously, but also tranquility and humility. Yes, the French team is very competitive, but there are other teams who are too, so everything in its time”, insists Didier Deschamps to Europe 1. “Let’s focus on the first three matches we will have before thinking about what can happen afterwards.”

The Blues’ schedule for the next Euro is already set: France will begin its tournament on June 17 against Austria, before the group clash, the Netherlands, on June 21. An opponent that the Tricolores mastered during the playoffs. The last meeting of the group stage against the play-off team will finally follow.

In the event of first place, France would face the second in group F in the round of 16, that is to say either Turkey, Portugal, the Czech Republic or another play-off.
