The well -known Canadian football player of Ukrainian descent Tanya Boychuk decided to change the citizenship of sports and joined the national team of Ukraine. Despite the fact that she played for the youth teams of Canada and called the main team, Boychuk said that she wanted to play for the country with which she had a deep connection.
The 25-year-old striker of the Montreal club RESSES explained its choice in order to support the Ukrainian people in the war.
“This is my way to give something to the Ukrainian community. I do this for all Ukrainians – in Canada, in Ukraine, around the world, ”said the football player in an interview with Public Sport.
Tanya was born in Edmonton in the family of Ukrainian emigrants, studied at the University of Memphis and played in the USA, Iceland and Sweden. In 2025, she returned to Canada, where she became the captain of the new Montreal Ruses team in a recently created Northern Super League.
Already in a debut match, she scored the first goal in the history of the club, and then distinguished himself with two more goals and effective transmission.
Despite the fact that she had experience in Canadian youth collections (U18 and U20), including participation in two Concacaf championships and five scored heads, she never played for the main team. After the beginning of a complete invasion of Russia, Boychuk thought about changing the national team, and in June 2025 it was called to the National team of Ukraine for a match against Poland.
The football player emphasized that the performance for “blue and yellow” is not only a sports step, but also a personal mission. “When people see the Ukrainians on the field, they remember that the war continues, that Russia is still attacking,” she said.
Now Boychuk hopes to help the national team of Ukraine with dignity in the elite unit of the League of Nations and set an example for young Ukrainians, regardless of where they live.
