Jacobs sprinter of the year for American Track Field

“Ready, steady, go: 2022, I’m ready …”. Marcell Jacobs launches his message from Tenerife in view of the return to racing, on the day in which the United States crowns him as the No. 1 in the world of sprint in 2021. He had demonstrated it in Tokyo, last August 1st, shocking opponents and forecasts for a historic Olympic gold of 100. The consecration of that result, however, comes at the end of a magical year for him and for all Italian sport, from Track and Field, the ‘bible’ of world athletics published in the United States. For the monthly which has been a point of reference for the Queen of the Games since 1948, the blue sprinter is the n.1 in the world ranking in 2021 in his specialty. Not a foregone conclusion, given Jacobs renouncing all the races following that gold, and especially considering the accusations that came from the United States and Great Britain immediately after the exploit at the Games. Doubts spiced up with veiled and more or less explicit suspicions of doping, for a winner who was neither American, nor Jamaican, and not even a favorite. “Rosicano”, Jacobs cut short, revealing that American rivals such as Fred Kerley, the fifteenth-century player beaten in the final in Tokyo, lied when they said they didn’t know him. “He had written me a message weeks before, predicting me 9”80 …”.

Now, the recognition of Track and Field is the first signal from the USA, in the year in which the World Cup will be held in Eugene, Oregon. “Since 2008, with Usain Bolt, it is the first time that a sprinter who had never entered it before has settled at the number 1 in the world”, comments the monthly in its online edition of the December magazine. “And it is the first time since Tilli in 84 of an Italian in this ranking”. The US magazine motivates his choice: “It was a difficult choice – consideration – given that Jacobs did not race after Tokyo; he did not win any Diamond League races, but on that calendar he beat Kerley, and the 2-0 on Olympic silver was decisive. All in all, Jacobs didn’t win much, but he won the biggest race of all … “.

Now the blue sprinter is about to end his ‘rest’ period: the return is scheduled for the indoor meeting in Berlin, on February 4th, after the holidays Jacobs flew to the Canary Islands for the last month of preparation for the heat. With him the family and the coach, Paolo Camossi, to whom the Olympic champion paid tribute on social networks in recent days with an open letter. “I don’t have many words to thank him, but we carry the two golds won together in our hearts; it’s the best way to thank him and win again”.
