Japan showed how its lunar robot climbs the hills

Competition for the exploration of lunar resources and the development of lunar bases is intensifying mainly in the United States and China, but the Japanese have shown a new product

Robot-lunar rover with arms showed its capabilities

GITAI develops Lunar Robotic Rover R1: he can perform tasks on the moon general purpose, such as exploration, mining, inspection, maintenance, assembly, and so on.

In December 2021, on the surface at the JAXA campus, the GITAI R1 lunar rover successfully completed all planned tests, writes Gitai.

During this ground demonstration in a simulated lunar environment, it passed the following tests:

  • Driving, mobility and overcoming obstacles
  • Solar Panel Assembly Test
  • Lunar resource mining test
  • Hill Climb Test

The GITAI R1 lunar robot rover has proven that its driving characteristics allow climbing a sandy slope at an angle of 15-20 degrees on a simulated lunar surface.

GITAI will continue to increase the versatility of its general purpose robots and compatibility with the lunar surface, to conduct a technology demonstration on the moon in the mid-2020s.
