Beware of the ‘HermeticWiper’ malware used in recent days in actions against government agencies and Ukrainian banks: it can destroy the data on a device, also undermining the correct functioning of the running operating system. The alarm comes from the National Cybersecurity Agency on the day of the Russian attack on Ukraine, which invites Italian companies and administrations to “urgently implement the compromise indicators available” on the CSIRT website (the response team in case of accidents that operates within the Agency) and “raise the level of attention by adopting as a priority the mitigation actions” reported. Experts trace the creation of the malware back to December 28, which suggests that the attack had been in preparation for two months. There is, at present, no evidence attributing these cyber-attacks to Russia. In the past, the United States had formally designated men from Gru, the Moscow intelligence agency, as part of a hacker group called the Sandworm responsible for hostile actions against Ukraine. The Kremlin has always denied.
