Ukraine: Nyt, Nokia away from Russia, but surveillance system remains

Ramy Shaath:

Nokia announced in recent weeks the stop of sales in Russia and denounced the invasion of Ukraine. However, the Finnish company did not mention what it was leaving behind in Russia, namely equipment and software capable of linking the Russian government’s most powerful surveillance tool with the largest telecommunications network in the country. A tool used by Moscow to track supporters of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny.

The New York Times reports it citing some documents, according to which for more than five years Nokia has provided equipment and services to tie SORM to the major Russian telecommunications provider MTS. While Nokia does not manufacture technology to intercept communications, documents reveal that it has worked with Russian government-related companies to plan and troubleshoot SORM’s connection with MTS. The Russian intelligence service FSB uses SORM to listen to telephone conversations, intercept emails and messages. From the documents, reports the New York Times, it therefore emerges that Nokia played a key role in allowing Russian cyberespionage, raising doubts about corporate responsibility.
