In Italy 110 million connected objects, almost 2 per person

Council (Gea):

There are 110 million connected and active objects in Italy, just over 1.8 per person. And there is strong growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) market, which marks + 22% compared to 2020 and reaches 7.3 billion euros above pre-Covid levels (in 2019 it was worth 6.2 billion) . These are some of the research results of the Internet of Things Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano, which underlines how a further boost will come from the PNRR, with 30 billion euros destined for dedicated projects.

“The market is in a phase of great development. Companies, Public Administrations and consumers are increasingly interested in remotely managing assets and smart devices, activating advanced services and functions”, says Giulio Salvadori, Director of the IoT Observatory. According to the research, at the end of 2021 there were 37 million cellular IoT connections (+ 9% compared to 2020) and 74 million connections enabled by other communication technologies (+ 25%). Among these, a boost comes from Lpwa (Low Power Wide Area) networks, low power and wide range networks, which double in just one year, passing from 1 to 2 million connections.

On the ‘consumer’ front, some examples of connected devices are smart TVs, audio speakers and smart lights, as well as home security devices and smart appliances. On the SME front, some examples are connected agricultural machinery, or industrial machinery that allows, by exploiting the reading of data, to anticipate malfunctions.

The Observatory also conducted a survey that involved 95 large companies and 302 Italian SMEs in the Industrial IoT sector, which shows that as many as 80% of large companies have activated value-added services based on the Internet of Things (+ 4% compared to 2020).
