Scientists have announced that they will open a mysterious sarcophagus found under the famous Cathedral of Ntótre Dame, discovered after a terrible fire that destroyed the building three years ago.
During preparatory work to restore the church’s ancient spire last month, workers discovered a well-preserved sarcophagus buried 20 meters deep among the brick pipes of a 19th-century heating system.
But it is believed that it is much older – perhaps from the XIV century.
Scientists have already peered into the sarcophagus with an endoscopic camera, finding the top of the skeleton, a cushion of leaves, fabrics and as yet unidentified objects, according to phys.org.
Scientists and forensic scientists hope to determine the sex of the skeleton and its state of health at the time of burial.
“If it turns out that this is actually a medieval sarcophagus, we are dealing with an extremely rare burial practice,” said lead archaeologist Christophe Besnier.
They also hope to determine the social status of the deceased. Considering the location and style of burial, the buried person may belong to the elite of his time.
