Claw marks on the surface of Mars: scientists have discovered the secret of their appearance

Unusual footprints on the surface of the Red Planet are not related to Martian monsters

The European Space Agency has published new photographs of features on the surface of Mars taken by the Mars Express spacecraft. Before that, a huge worm was noticed in the sky over Mars.

At first glance, these features look like someone ran their fingernails across the surface of the Red Planet, making long trenches in the process.

However, the ESA stated that these are not traces of an extraterrestrial monster, but an area called the Tantalum Hollows.

“The depressions were formed when the summit of Alba Mons rose in height, causing the surrounding surface to become warped, expanded and fractured.

Each trench, formed by two parallel faults, opened up, causing the rock between them to fall into the resulting void,” the ESA explains.

The same features can be found on the western side of Mount Alba, forming an incomplete ring around the volcano. In general, the grabens associated with this volcano are up to 1000 km long, up to 10 km wide, and up to 350 m deep.

Earlier we wrote that the wreckage of a spaceship was found on Mars. Scientists will study their condition to better understand the process of landing on the Red Planet.
