(ANSA) – MILAN, MAY 05 – Instagram’s efforts continue to counter the success of TikTok as the favorite social network for young people. Adam Mosseri, at the head of Instagram, confirmed the arrival of a new app design, which focuses on photo and video content. Upon opening on smartphones, users will instantly see their wall posts in full screen and in portrait mode, just like TikTok.

Unlike now, where Instagram shows a clearer separation between content, reactions, comments and descriptions, with the news, texts and related icons will be included at the bottom of images and videos, thus creating greater continuity and fluidity in scrolling. Mosseri tweeted the start of the test phase, which will reach more users in the coming days.

Seine Kim, a spokesperson for Meta, told the TechCrunch site that the layout of the menus will not change, with the stories still accessible at the top of the screen and search, Reels, purchases and the user profile at the bottom, with related sections. Notifications, messages, and new post features stay on top, along with the ability to switch between accounts. Instagram’s choice to test feeds focused on immersive posts comes as no surprise. The company has heavily pushed the short video format, offering bonuses and credits to creators who make the best Reels. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, noted in its latest earnings statement last week that TikTok clone Reels now accounts for more than 20% of the time people spend on Instagram. On Facebook, videos of all kinds account for 50% of the time spent on the platform. At the end of April, Mosseri had shared the change of course for the algorithm that Instagram uses to show posts to subscribers, announcing the desire to reward “original” content over those republished by other platforms.
