This is how your Pixel might save your life

Google just rolled out a new update on Pixel. It targets emergency calls and it brings a notable innovation: the automatic recording of a video.

Spotted by XDA, this function is therefore likely to provide many services to owners of a device in the range … but also to emergency services. We will explain everything to you.

Not everyone necessarily knows it, but the Pixels have an integrated emergency service accessible through the power button.

The Pixels will also be able to record videos in an emergency.

When you are in a dangerous situation, you can press this button five times to automatically call the emergency service in your country. Either 911 in the United States, or 112 here.

Still on the Pixels, you also have in the settings a menu dedicated to all questions related to security and emergencies.

Thanks to it, you can share personal information such as your last name, first name, blood type or even your allergies. In the event of a problem, the emergency services will therefore be able to consult this data without having to unlock your smartphone. It is also possible to define the name of an emergency contact, a contact who can for example track your location.

A function that is not yet available

And precisely, it is this application that will be enriched with a new video recording function. A function that will allow the Pixels to capture a sequence and send it to emergency contacts in the event of a problem.

Better yet, if we are to believe the discoveries made by our colleagues, then these videos can last 45 minutes at most. The flow is indeed compressed and the total weight must not exceed 10 minutes.

Note, however, that the activation of the emergency call is not immediate. When the user presses the power button on their Pixel five times, they have five seconds to cancel the call, which limits the risk of error.

Videos, on the other hand, are not stored locally, but in the cloud. Emergency contacts therefore receive a link to consult them, and they can do so even if the Pixel is turned off or disconnected. On the other hand, these sequences are only kept for seven days. After this period, they are in fact automatically deleted. For his part, the user can of course choose to erase it before if he wishes.
