After ransomware, cryware is the emerging danger

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 21 – After ransomware, there is another cyber threat that is spreading. It is cryware, a new form of attack that targets cryptocurrency wallets. The alarm was raised by a report from the Microsoft security team, which explains how numerous thefts have occurred and that the threat will be increasingly concrete in the coming months. Cryware refers to different types of attacks that target e-money wallets such as cryptojackers, which drain the energy resources of the victim’s device to produce virtual currency, but also ClipBankers, which steal digital currency during transactions.

An increasingly growing sector is attracting hackers, despite the downward fluctuations, in this period, of many electronic currencies, primarily bitcoin.

According to Microsoft 365 Defender Research, the emerging threat “collects and exfilters data directly from cryptocurrency wallets stored locally on a device,” so-called ‘hot wallets’ that provide “easier access to the cryptographic keys needed to execute transactions.” Unfortunately for users, in the event of theft the damage is irreversible as blockchain transactions cannot be changed even if they are made without the legitimate user’s consent.
