Organized cybercrime increases, ransomware attacks + 13%

(ANSA) – MILAN, MAY 30 – In the hours in which the pro-Russian hackers of ‘Killnet’ return to threaten Italy, an analysis by Verizon shows how, year after year, ransomware attacks have increased almost everywhere. In fact, there is a 13% increase in the particular types of cyber threats which, once the victims have been hit, limit access to the infected device, requiring a ransom. This is a higher percentage growth than all those of the last five years combined.

According to Verizon Business’ Data Breach Investigations Report 2022, growing geopolitical tensions are leading hackers to be more sophisticated but also states to arm themselves with the necessary defenses to secure their systems. For the study, about 4 out of 5 violations can be attributed to organized crime, with external actors 4 times more likely than interns to cause violations against an organization. This means that intruders within companies are dwindling in favor of attacks launched by independent or state-sponsored groups. Speaking in detail about the human element, people remain the weakest link in a company’s cybersecurity defenses. 25% of the total breaches detected in the 2022 report were the result of social engineering attacks, i.e. techniques used by hackers to discover passwords and obtain personal data of an individual by integrating the various information left online. The human element, in terms of unexpected error, represents 82% of the violations analyzed in the last year. (HANDLE).
