(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 13 – Google dismisses one of its engineers responsible for the organization of artificial intelligence, putting him on paid leave. The decision follows Black Lemoine’s publication of a transcript of his communication with the LaMDA – Language Model for Dialogue Applications interface – which he was developing. Lemoine started working on the system in 2021 and, as the months went by, he noticed that he had become sentient and able to have conversations about religion, conscience and robotics.

“If I hadn’t known what it was, I would have thought it was a seven to eight year old,” Lemoine told The Washington Post. Lemoine told Google executives about LaMDA’s capabilities and his concerns about it, but was rejected. According to the newspaper, the engineer was dismissed for trying to contact the House Justice Committee regarding allegedly unethical Google practices. Mountain View, on the other hand, states that the suspension is linked to the violation of the company’s privacy policies and explains that Lemoine was clearly told that there was no evidence that LaMDA was sentient. The episode raises doubts about the transparency of artificial intelligence and how it is and can be used. (HANDLE).
