(ANSA-AFP) – ROME, JUN 14 – Amazon plans to start making some deliveries with drones by the end of the year in a California city, in Lockerford: the e-commerce giant himself has announced. Retail rival Walmart already offers drone delivery and in May announced the increase in the service, with an expansion to six states by the end of the year and a potential for delivery of one million packages per year.

Amazon customers in the city of Lockeford, Northern California, will be able to sign up for free delivery with “Prime Air” drones, the company said in a post. “Air-shipable” items ordered on the retailer’s website will be packaged and will fly drones to delivery addresses, drop packages outside from safe heights, then fly away. Amazon says it has created a sophisticated detection system to allow its drones to avoid planes, people, pets and other obstacles. “We designed our detection system for two main scenarios: to be safe in transit and to be safe when approaching the ground,” the company said. The California feedback will be used to expand the drone service.

A variety of companies ranging from new startups to major tech companies like Alphabet, Google’s parent company, are working on autonomous delivery of drones. The Alphabet Wing drone project completed its first deliveries in 2014 to rural Australia, where it successfully transported first aid supplies, chocolate bars, dog treats and water to farmers, according to the website of the agency. Two years later, Wing drones were used to deliver burritos to students at a Virginia university. “The logistics industry is in turmoil with all drones,” said the Amazon team.
