Earthquake in Turkey, damage map in 2 cities from Italian satellites

Images have arrived from the Italian COSMO-SkyMed radar satellites of the damage caused by the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria between 5 and 6 February. The images taken by the constellation of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and processed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology show the damage suffered by the cities of Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras and will provide support for relief efforts.

Seventeen days after the first violent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, satellites continue to acquire images to monitor the many cities affected by the earthquake which caused over 40,000 victims in Turkey alone. The latest images received from the Cosmo-SkyMed satellites date back to February 20 and show the damage suffered by the cities of Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras through the method called Intensity Correlation Difference, which made it possible to create maps with the estimate of the damage based on changes in the same site, before and after the earthquake

The maps highlight the areas that have suffered damage, such as the destruction of Gaziantep Castle, which has become one of the symbols of the devastation of the earthquake. Numerous collapses also in the images of the city of Kahramanmaras, one of the most affected by the earthquake.
