Virgo is one of the 13 zodiacal constellations and the journey to discover the sky with EDUInaf videos starts from here. It is a fascinating constellation for the role it has played in the history of astronomy. Indeed, by measuring the position of the brightest star in Virgo, Spica, in 150 BC the astronomer Hipparchus discovered the precession of the equinoxes, i.e. the phenomenon that occurs because the non-perfectly spherical shape of the Earth and the action of the force of gravity of the Moon and Sun cause the orientation of our planet’s axis of rotation to change slowly and continuously with respect to the ideal sphere of the fixed stars.
The constellation Virgo is also fascinating because it includes numerous deep-sky objects and, among these, the black hole M87* which has become famous all over the world for being the first black hole to be photographed.
