Cop26, for Qualcomm zero emissions in 2040

Death alert in Germany:

(ANSA) – MILAN, 04 NOV – Qualcomm, one of the leading semiconductor manufacturers in the world, also used the opportunity of Cop26, the climate conference, to communicate its long-term environmental objectives. The group explained that it wants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, i.e. balancing CO2 emissions with their removal or reduction, for example through the increased use of renewable energy. The path consists of three phases. In the first, Qualcomm promises to reduce emissions of the Scope 1 and 2 category by 50%, compared to the values of 2020, by 2030.

Scope 1 emissions are those produced by activities directly connected to the company, such as heating systems and the movement of company vehicles. The Scope 2 instead derive from the generation of electricity, heat and steam, imported and consumed by Qualcomm. The second step involves reducing Scope 3 emissions, which are not under Qualcomm’s direct control, by 25% by 2030, also due to supplier operations. Finally, the goal of net zero emissions by 2040. Qualcomm has also promised to completely ‘decarbonise’ its San Diego headquarters, using renewable energy and offsetting the carbon emitted. According to an estimate by Imec, a nanotechnology research center, about 75% of greenhouse gas emissions from a hi-tech device are produced when it is made, with nearly half coming from the chip manufacturing process.
