Copernicus, summer 2023 a little rainier and hotter than average

Summer 2023 could be slightly hotter and rainier than the average in southern Europe, including Italy: this is indicated by the first seasonal weather forecasts elaborated by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), implemented by the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasting on behalf of the European Commission, with EU funding.

According to the latest bulletin updated at the beginning of May, the likelihood of above-average rainfall over southern Europe throughout the summer (June-August) is growing. Overall, the expected anomalies are contained, with rainfall quantities that should not mark a significant difference with respect to the pre-existing drought conditions in these regions.

As for temperatures, above-average seasonal values are expected everywhere, especially in southern and western Europe, but overall the forecasts do not seem to be more worrying than those made for summer 2022.
At the moment, the data arriving from the equatorial Pacific Ocean indicate the development of El Nino during the second half of 2023 as almost certain, but the effects probably will not be visible before the end of the summer.
