LG unveils a rollable portable TV, it will make you crack

  • LG unveils a concept of a portable mini TV with a rollable screen that can also be used as a mobile speaker
  • As on the very luxurious LG Signature XXL TV of the same type, the screen, here 18″, can only be deployed partially and serve as a display
  • The concept was unveiled on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Display Week event

You probably remember the very futuristic Rollable OLED R 65″ rollable TV, launched by LG in 2019 with a selling price of over 100,000 euros. Obviously, at this stage, the product therefore serves mainly as a technological demonstrator.

LG was thus able to show its vision of such screens which can disappear completely in their case and therefore from your interior at the touch of a button. But that’s not all: for example, if you use the Rollable OLED R to play music, it is possible to deploy only a portion of the screen, which then only displays the name of the track in progress.

This LG Rollable OLED R mini TV has everything to make us crack

Of course, we expected LG to try to democratize this rather impressive technology. And according to a concept unveiled by the brand on the sidelines of Display Week, LG has an idea in the pipeline – and it’s hard to deny that we really like it.

Pretty much it’s exactly the same TV as the Rollable OLED R, but in a much more compact form factor. The screen is only 18″ diagonally. The case/soundbar has rounded corners. However, LG slips that it could be a combo TV + portable Bluetooth speaker capable of revolutionizing the genre.

Beyond that, we know very little about the characteristics of the product, beyond the tweet of Vicent Teoh (journalist-tester at HDTVTest). Except that we are faced with a rather bright panel (1000 nits) for a 1440p definition. The journalist suggests that LG uses an MLA (Micro Lens Array) panel.

The idea is to place thousands of small lenses on each pixel to focus the light emitted by the pixels, resulting in a brighter image. Alas, LG does not give any additional details for the moment. We will therefore not know if (or when) the brand intends to market this very attractive mini portable TV.

The other big unknown is its price: we hope that LG has managed to melt production costs, because it is impossible for the general public to buy this format beyond a certain price. Such a format also seems to stick more to a more mainstream product than LG’s first roll-up TV.

Finally, no word has filtered on the presence, or not, of a battery, which would make the product truly portable, and even less its capacity if necessary – nor information on the characteristics of the speaker part…
