Sharing your passwords (Netflix) will be easier on macOS Sonoma

  • Apple just presented macOS Sonoma at the WWDC conference
  • This version includes a feature that makes it easier to share passwords with friends or family
  • You can even share your Netflix password (if you meet the platform’s requirements)

Last night, Apple went all out again during the keynote of its WWDC conference. Of course, the star of the event was the new augmented reality platform. However, the firm has not forgotten iPhones or Macs. As for computers, it has lifted the veil on new models, as well as the new macOS Sonoma operating system. Of course, Sonoma includes a lot of new features. But for those who use and share their accounts on streaming services, the password or passkey sharing function is a small revolution.

Currently, if you need to share your password with someone, the most common practice is to send the information via an email system (encrypted, preferably). But Apple wants to put an end to this practice. On macOS Sonoma, we will indeed be able to create groups with other users, and share passwords with this group. As the firm explains, each member of the group can add new passwords and modify them. And because the feature leverages iCloud Keychain, shared information is end-to-end encrypted.

Finally, it should be noted that this sharing system on macOS Sonoma also works with passkeys, the cryptographic key system with which Apple, Google and many tech players want to replace the old-fashioned password.

Coming soon, a family group for the Netflix password

Concretely, the members of a family, who each have their devices and their Apple accounts, can therefore create a group for sharing passwords for streaming services, such as Netflix or Spotify, or for access to storage in line. The timing of the presentation of this feature is quite funny, however, since Netflix recently decided to crack down on password sharing.

However, account sharing on Netflix is still accepted for people living in the same household (it is possible to set up a Netflix household on a smartTV). In addition, the platform has provided some exceptions, such as students studying away from home, separated couples who have children or military personnel on mission. And thanks to the novelty offered by Apple, this sharing will be done more easily, by creating a group.

Compatible models

However, to take advantage of this macOS novelty, you will need to have the macOS Sonoma update. And Apple has already given the list of models that will receive this update later. Here is the list of compatible Macs:

  • 2019 and newer iMac
  • iMac Pro from 2017 and newer
  • MacBook Air from 2018 and newer
  • MacBook Pro from 2018 and newer
  • Mac Pro from 2019 and newer
  • Mac Studio 2022 and newer
  • Mac mini from 2018 and newer

Otherwise, remember that the firm has just presented the new Mac Pro, the new Mac Studio M2 Ultra, as well as a 15-inch MacBook Air.
