Now the fitness trainer from the Caribbean will be among the first Virgin Galactic space tourists, according to their press office.

Schahaff won the prize after participating in a fundraising lottery run by the company on the Omaze platform. The lottery raised $ 1.7 million, with an entry fee starting at $ 10.

Schahaff wants to fly with her 17-year-old daughter, who is studying natural sciences in the UK and dreams of getting a job at NASA.

Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson personally came to the Shahaff home in Antigua and Barbuda in November to surprise her and break the news.

“I just thought I was doing an interview. When I saw Branson, I started screaming! I couldn’t believe it,” Schahaff said.

According to the woman, as a child she was always interested in space, and the future journey will be for her the greatest adventure in her life.

“The ability to provide people of all ages and backgrounds with equal access to space is what Virgin Galactic has been striving for over the past two decades,” Branson said.

Virgin Galactic has already pre-sold about 700 tickets to space: 600 between 2005 and 2014 at up to $ 250,000 and another 100 from August at $ 450,000.

The company hopes to sell 1,000 tickets ahead of commercial flights. The first will take place at the end of 2022.

The trip offers a few minutes in zero gravity and will take tourists to the so-called edge of space (an altitude of about 80 km).

Earlier it was also reported that China decided to send people to Mars as early as 2033.
