Etna, the database is online that tells 2,500 years of eruptions

Dante is onlineThe database that tells further 2,500 years of eruption of Etna: created by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology thanks to researchers from the Etneo Observatory of Catania and the Pisa section, the project made it possible to put together a huge amount of data and to make them easily accessible to everyone, with the aim of increasing awareness and knowledge on the danger of the volcano.

“The new database represents a single and accessible resourcewhich brings together in a single information platform to date scattered in various scientific publications, many of which are difficult to access for the non-specialized public, “says Stefano Branca, director of the Etna Observatory of the Ingv and co-author of Dante.” The project-he adds-is designed to be dynamic: it will be in fact open to new contributions and updates based on historical, geological and scientific sources Future “.

The platform is the result of a review of the main catalogs already published previously, integrated and updated with the data of the monitoring carrying out the INGV. Is divided into Two time intervals: the first, which goes From the 6th century AC to the 16th century AD., is based on the data derived from the Etna geological card published in 2011 and its subsequent updates, while the interval that covers the period From the 17th century AD to the present dayis based on the data obtained by the many scientific studies, integrated with those of the monitoring carried out in the last 50 years.
