Customized therapies, as in a game thanks to supercomputer

Diseases such as interchangeable modules and patients such as playing fields: it may seem the description of a video game but it is instead what could take place shortly thanks to personalized medicine. To make this revolution possible are the most advanced Silico Medicine solutions – Spoke 8 of ICSC, National HPC research Center, Big Data and Quantum Computing – through which, thanks to the Supercalcolo, it becomes possible to simulate complex biological processes, the evolution of pathologies, therapeutic protocols and support the future personalized and predictive medicine.

“One of our top projects is it Universal Immune System Simulator (UISS)a advanced simulator of human immune system developed by the Combine Research Group of the University of Catania over 15 years ago. UISS allows you to reproduce the effects of complex pathologies in silic, such as Covid-19 or other disorders borne by the immune system, simulating the Disease coursethe cellular and tissue responsesand evaluating theimpact of drugs Or therapies before their clinical application, “said Valentina Di Salvatore of the University of Catania and involved in the Spoke 8 of ICSC.

The activities of Spoke 8 represent an important step towards personalized medicine, an emerging health paradigm that aims to design tailor -made therapies and drugs for the individual patient, taking into account its genetic, biological and clinical characteristics, as well as the specific nature of the pathology. A change that requires increasingly precise mathematical models and supercomputer able to quickly process large volumes of different form data.

“With UISS – said Salvatore again – we developed a computational model of human immune systemthrough which it is possible to study, through dedicated modules, different pathologies. The model can be personalized Based on the patient’s specific data, not only genetic but also biological and clinical.
Once configured, the system is able to perform complete simulations in a few minutes. ” A scenario that until recently appeared science fiction but that is very close to becoming a practice available to everyone.
