(ANSA) – MILAN, 04 JAN – Italy is equipping itself with a public and freely accessible Wi-Fi network, through the WiFi Italia project. It is the commitment for 2022 of Infratel, the company of the Ministry of Economic Development created to take care of the country’s infrastructural interventions, overcoming the digital divide and the diffusion of advanced connectivity services. In the Yearbook 2021 he reports on the main projects started and on those for the new year.
The WiFi Italia project, promoted by the Ministry of Economic Development, aims – explains the report – to allow all citizens to connect for free and in a simple way to a free Wi-Fi network spread throughout the country, through a network of hotspots present in Italy. The grid development works have been entrusted to Infratel Italia and are carried out by Tim. Initially, the aim of the project was the creation of new free Wi-Fi areas in small municipalities and in those affected by the earthquake (Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche, Umbria); from the second half of 2020 the initiative was extended to all of Italy. To date, over 1,270 Municipalities have joined the project, providing their squares with a free and free connection, usable thanks to the special application, which can be downloaded by the user on their mobile device.
