65 years ago, US President Harry Truman appointed George Marshall, one of the most notorious politicians of the 20th century, as Secretary of State. Learn the story of the hero of the day (January 21) in 1 minute

Savior of Europe George Marshall

On this day, January 21, 1947, the country’s first five-star general became the new US Secretary of State (that is, the organizer and curator of the foreign policy of the United States).

By that time, George Marshall was famous for creating the National Guard, controlling the Manhattan Project (Los Alamos) and putting an end to World War II by organizing the atomic bombing of Japan.

But the military-politician gained the greatest fame thanks to the “Marshall Plan”, which allowed Europe, destroyed in World War II, to get out of the crisis in a short time. As a result, our “hero of the day” was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1953). He is the first and only professional soldier to receive such an award.

At the same time, Marshall is blamed for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The general himself repeatedly stated: “Nuclear weapons had to be used to end the war, although the price of this turned out to be too high.”
