How a journalist-writer came up with Scrooge, Uriah Heep and Copperfield – a story of the day in a minute

It was on this day, exactly 210 years in the port city of Portsmouth in the south of England, that the most widely read English-language prose writer was born (moreover, he became one during his lifetime – and since then he has not lost the championship to anyone) Charles John Huffam Dickens

The works of Dickens, by the way, our colleague, who started as a reporter in a newspaper, completely changed the attitude towards literature, making it accessible to absolutely everyone.

Fictionist realist

By the middle of the XIX century (namely, this period fell on the heyday of Dickens’s popularity), the number of literate people among the “lower strata” in the same Britain was already considerable. They, like the privileged representatives of society, already knew the letter, but they wanted to read what was close to them: not the heroic “knightly novels” invented by the writers about the adventures of the nobility, but something closer to their ordinary life, full of hardships, difficulties, but in which there was a place and love.

It was Charles Dickens, who wrote in the style of realism (but never tired of endowing his characters with sentimental character traits), who gave them this. The result was not long in coming: Dickens during his lifetime became an incredibly popular author among all walks of life.

“People’s Writer of Great Britain”

From the pen of Charles Dickens came such novels that have become classics of world literature, such as The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, “Our Mutual Friend”, “Great Expectations”, “The Secret of Edwin Drood”.

Yes, the famous illusionist magician David Copperfield, who thundered all over the world in the 1990s, is a pseudonym inspired by Dickens, but in fact his name is David … Kotkin.

Uriah Heep is not only the name of a cult rock band, but also the name of a character in one of Dickens’ novels. Just like the name of the miser-Scrooge, which has become a household name all over the world.

The very fact that the characters, “revived” by Dickens, “left” to the people, starting to live their own lives, suggests that he still managed to touch the strings of the souls of the widest range of readers. That is why he is rightfully considered a “people’s” author of a global scale.
