The European Union conveyed to the representative of Russia a general response to a letter from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in which the EU countries were required to clarify their point of view on certain international agreements.

The letter from the Russians stated that the West is selective in its implementation, European Pravda reports.

“I can confirm that the reply to Minister Lavrov’s written communication was given to the Russian representative in Brussels this morning”– said the representative of the European Commission Peter Stano.

According to him, the response was signed by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on behalf of 27 EU member states. Stano said that he could not go into details of the answer until it became known that the Russian side had read it.

The EU’s response states that the European Union, together with NATO partners, is “ready to continue the dialogue with Russia on ways to improve security for all.” Particular attention is paid to the negotiations within the OSCE, given that all EU countries are members of the organization, in contrast to NATO, which includes only 21 EU countries.

What did Russia demand?

Lavrov’s appeal was published on February 1. In it, the minister stated that the West selectively interprets the European Security Charter signed in Istanbul in 1999 “to justify the course taken towards the irresponsible expansion of NATO.” Lavrov said in a statement that according to the document, no country should strengthen its security at the expense of others.

“We proceed from the fact that the reaction to this message will come in a national capacity, since the mentioned obligations were accepted by each of our states individually, and not on behalf of or as part of any bloc”– said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Russia opposes NATO expansion and Ukraine’s entry there. Russian President Vladimir Putin is afraid that NATO will deploy missiles in Ukraine that can fly to Moscow in 5-10 minutes. He warned that if “the obviously aggressive line of Western colleagues” continues, Moscow will take “adequate retaliatory military-technical measures.”

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Ukraine should receive a MAP from NATO in 2022. Also, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels turned to NATO because of Russia’s threats.

US military spokesman John Kirby said that Russia has no right to veto the issue of countries joining NATO. According to him, only these states and the Alliance itself can solve this issue.
