Jerusalem, a new night of violence in Sheikh Jarrah

(ANSAmed) – TEL AVIV, FEBRUARY 14 – Israeli police are deployed in force in the Sheikh Jarrah district (East Jerusalem) after a new night of clashes between Palestinian and Jewish residents. According to sources cited by the Maan news agency, 31 Palestinians were injured or bruised, and another 11 were arrested by the police. Far-right Israeli MP Itamar Ben Gvir was also superficially injured in the incidents, and two Jewish activists were arrested.

Tensions in the neighborhood escalated two days ago with the arson of a Jewish home and the wounding of a young Jewish man, hit by a speeding Palestinian car. Furthermore, a Palestinian family risks being evicted shortly from Sheikh Jarrah’s home where they have lived for decades.

Jordan today condemned the behavior of the Israeli authorities, while Hamas and Islamic Jihad threatened retaliation from Gaza. Meanwhile in Jenin (West Bank) the funeral of a young Palestinian who died last night in a fire fight with Israeli soldiers took place this morning.

“Millions of martyrs march on Jerusalem” marked the crowd that flaunted the flags of al-Fatah. (ANSAmed).
