Unity Day in Ukraine, in Kiev anthem and flags in the wind

Ukraine is celebrating the Day of Unity today for the first time, announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky on the day in which, according to the West, Russia could have invaded the country. Many have accepted the appeal of the head of state to raise the yellow and blue flags and to sing the national anthem at 10 o’clock. In Kiev, a few dozen people gathered in the famous Independence Square, the Maidan of the 2013 protests, called by the youth organizations to which passersby also joined. They sang the anthem and hoisted signs with slogans praising the unity and sovereignty of the country: “Independent Ukraine in an independent Europe”, reads a banner.

“We are proud to be Ukrainians and we must show ourselves united, all from north to south, from east to west,” Mikola Sherchenko, a 22-year-old doctor, told ANSA. “We are afraid and that is why many people have already left Ukraine. Others have remained, like me, we have to support our people”, says Natalia Klorachina, a 46-year-old teacher and interpreter who stopped on her way to work. . “Let’s hope so,” she adds. Julia Kovalenko, a 19-year-old student, is “sure that everything will be fine”: “I was born in Ukraine and I love my country. I think it is strong, we are heroes and Ukraine has a great great future”. Other flashmobs have been launched on social media in other parts of the country by the youth organization ‘Ze! Molodezhka ‘.
