(ANSA-AFP) – NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 17 – Thirteen women and girls died in northern India when they fell into a well after the sheet metal that covered it gave way under their weight, police said.
“Thirteen women died in the accident that took place during the night between yesterday and today,” explained Akhil Kumar, deputy chief of police in Kushinagar, the district in the state of Uttar Pradesh where the accident occurred. During the ceremonies of a wedding in a village, women and girls were seated on the metal plate covering the well which gave way, causing everyone to fall inside. Rajalingam, the structure was old and could not bear the weight of so many people. “The victims fell and were crushed by the rubble,” she explained. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the news of the “heartbreaking” incident on Twitter: “The local administration is involved in any possible help”, he assured him.
Indian weddings are often grandiose events whose celebrations welcome large numbers of guests and last for several days. In 2017, 24 wedding guests were killed when a wall collapsed during a violent storm in the western state of Rajasthan.
