If Russian President Vladimir Putin attacks Ukraine, it will be a harbinger of Russia using force to annex more former Soviet republics. This was stated by the head of the British Foreign Office Liz Truss in an interview with Mail On Sunday.

“We need to stop Putin because he won’t stop at Ukraine. He was very clear: his ambitions not only led him to take control of Ukraine, he wants to turn back the clock to the mid-1990s or even earlier.”– she said.

According to Truss, the Baltic states and the Western Balkans will be next in danger.

“Putin has publicly stated all this that he wants to create a Greater Russia, that he wants to return to the situation that was before, when Russia controlled huge swaths of Eastern Europe. That is why it is so important that we and our allies stand up to Putin. Next week it is maybe Ukraine, but then what country will be next?” said the British minister.

Russian invasion threat

Western officials have warned in recent weeks that Russia could launch an invasion of Ukraine at any moment.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that Russian troops are fully prepared to strike at Ukraine. Therefore, the US Department of Defense is ready to deploy an additional military contingent on the eastern flank of NATO.

NATO sees signs that Russia may launch a full-scale attack on Ukraine, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that provocations are now very dangerous. “One shelling, one artillery fire can lead to war”he warned.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned of the biggest war since 1945.

According to the latest US government estimates, between 169,000 and 190,000 Russian troops are currently deployed along the border with Ukraine, both in Russia and in neighboring Belarus (this figure includes militants in occupied Ukraine).
