(ANSA) – SYDNEY, FEBRUARY 27 – At least five people have died, while another is reported missing following the floods caused by the heavy rains that have raged in eastern Australia since the beginning of the week, submerging entire buildings.
The authorities reported today. Queensland State Police have announced that they have found the bodies of three other victims, in addition to the two deaths recorded since the beginning of the week, and that they are still searching for a missing person.
Emergency services responded to more than 1,800 calls for help in 24 hours, authorities added.
After several years of drought and forest fires exacerbated by climate change, Eastern Australia experienced an extraordinarily humid summer, due to La Niña, a climatic phenomenon originating from a thermal anomaly of the equatorial surface waters of the Pacific Ocean. (HANDLE).
