Covid: Turkey removes mandatory outdoor masks

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, 02 MAR – “It is no longer mandatory to wear a mask outdoors”. This was stated by the Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, according to reports from the Anadolu agency, following a meeting of the scientific committee on coronavirus in which it was decided that the conditions are in place for the opening of a “normalization” phase . The minister spoke of a “new period” and stated that the use of a mask is not mandatory even indoors if the room has adequate ventilation and a safe distance is maintained. The use of the mask remains mandatory on public transport, on airplanes, cinemas, theaters, hospitals and schools. The minister urged citizens to have a mask always at hand to use when in contact with people suffering from chronic diseases.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), when the first case of Covid was recorded in Turkey in March 2020, 94,445 people died in the country due to the disease. The cases recorded in total amount to over 14 million and 88 thousand and, according to data from the Turkish Ministry of Health, 85.10% of the population received the second dose of the vaccine.
