Student arrested after killing two women in Swedish school attack

Two women were killed this Monday, 21, in an attack on a school in malmoin the south of Sweden, for which an 18-year-old student was detained, Swedish police said. The two women, in their 50s, were employees of the Malmö Latin school, located in the center of the city, the third largest in the country. According to local media, the alleged perpetrator contacted the emergency service to report where he was, that he was in possession of a weapon and to admit to killing the two people. Some Swedish media outlets indicated that the suspect had a knife and an axe.

Earlier, information was released that two people were injured in the attack, among about 50 who were in the establishment at the time of the crime. The two victims “were taken to a hospital, but their lives could not be saved”, the authorities said. According to images shown on Swedish television, cordons were installed in front of the student establishment and many police vehicles and ambulances were sent to the scene. No motivation or modus operandi has been revealed so far.

When the police were alerted to the incident, they deployed a large security device and managed to take control of the situation, according to the authorities’ incomplete report. After receiving preliminary information that there were screams in the school, “we obtained more information about the serious crime that was being committed, with acts of violence inside the school”, said a police spokesman, Nils Norling. “The first patrol arrived at the school and arrested a suspicious man. They were able to see that there were two wounded inside the teaching center,” he added.
