Ukraine: Scholz, Germany evaluates missile defense system

(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 28 – Germany is considering the purchase of an anti-missile defense system to protect itself from a potential Russian attack, said Chancellor Olaf Scholz quoted by the BBC.

“This is certainly one of the issues we are discussing, and for good reason,” Scholz replied to public broadcaster Ard when asked if Germany could buy a system like the Israeli Iron Dome. However, he did not specify which typology Berlin is considering.

Asked whether Germany wants to purchase a defense system with a greater range than its current Patriot batteries, Scholz replied, “We need to be aware that we have a neighbor who is willing to use violence to enforce their interests.”

Germany – remembers the BBC – has transformed its defense policy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, announcing tens of billions of dollars more for the army and pledging to reach the NATO military spending target of 2% of GDP. (HANDLE).
