Israel: ultimatum to Bennett from another deputy ‘Yamina’

(ANSA) – TEL AVIV, 07 APR – The situation is getting more complicated for Prime Minister Naftali Bennett who is grappling with a possible government crisis, triggered by his own party, ‘Yamina’ through the resignation of a deputy from the Idit Silman group. Another MP from the Nir Orbach group issued an ultimatum to Bennett to stay in the majority coalition.

There are three requests: the withdrawal of the government plan that cancels subsidies for family housing for students of religious schools; the convening of the commission for the launch of 4,000 new homes in the West Bank. And the electricity connection for the illegal Jewish outposts still in the West Bank. If the “requests” were accepted, Orbach said he was willing to remain in the majority. Otherwise, if the MP left, Bennett’s government would go into the minority with 59 seats compared to 60 for the opposition after having already lost a seat with Silman’s resignation.

The premier today met again with Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked, party number two and key figure. But the course for Bennett seems to be uphill now, even if he has garnered the support of the other leaders of the composite ruling coalition made up of right, center, left and, for the first time, an Arab party.
