Western Sahara: Polisario breaks off relations with Spain

(ANSA) – ALGIERS, APRIL 10 – The independence movement of the Polisario announced today an “interruption” of contacts with the Spanish government to protest against the turning point adopted by Madrid in the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

“The Polisario Front has decided to cut off contacts with the current Spanish government” for its “exploitation of the Western Sahara issue in shameful negotiations with the (Moroccan) occupier”, writes the movement in a statement.

The rupture will last until Madrid “complies with the decisions of international legality, which recognize the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, and to respect the borders of their country, as recognized internationally”.

Spain on March 18 declared that it had agreed to publicly recognize Rabat’s autonomy plan for the territory, ending a ten-year position of neutrality. By accepting a long-standing Moroccan request, Spain sought to end a dispute that erupted in April 2021 when it allowed Western Saharan independence leader Brahim Ghali to be treated for Covid-19 in a Spanish hospital.

Weeks after Ghali’s admission, more than 10,000 migrants poured into the small Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Morocco. Last week, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI hosted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on a historic visit sealing the ties of their countries. Rabat sees Western Sahara as an integral part of the kingdom and proposes the autonomy of the region. (HANDLE).
