Syria: UN envoy, new round of opposition-government talks

(ANSA) – BEIRUT, APRIL 28 – The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced in the last few hours that he had sent invitations to representatives of the Syrian government and opposition in exile for the eighth round of talks planned between the end of May and the beginning of June, with the aim of continuing negotiations for the revision of the constitution of the battered Arab country.

Pedersen, who addressed the UN Security Council, did not rule out that a possible agreement between the parties could contribute to a political solution to the armed conflict, which has been underway since 2011.

The previous round of talks ended at the end of last March with yet another stalemate. The government and opposition delegations had taken their time asking to review the various texts presented in order to continue discussions.

Pedersen’s deputy, Khawla Matar of Bahrain, went in recent weeks to Damascus, to meet with government officials, and to Istanbul, to meet with representatives of the opposition in exile, to prepare for the 8 / o round scheduled between May 28 and next June 3 in Geneva. (HANDLE).
