The advance of Russian troops in the Donbass and southern Ukraine has been uneven, and there are several reasons for this.

This was announced by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

Details

According to him, in general, the Pentagon does not think that the Russian Federation has decided its logistics and support issues:

“They are more careful not to go too far ahead of their supply lines. So they kept them (troops – Ed.) at a pretty slow pace in terms of movement.”

Kirby also noted the fierce Ukrainian resistance:

“This is the territory for which they (Ukrainians. – Ed.) have been fighting for eight years, this is their home. They know it. And they know where to be. their ability to take certain towns and villages – or even in the case where they retreated and the Ukrainians took them again. Thus, the Ukrainians are in many ways one of the reasons that Russia does not progress very evenly or even at a pace.

The Pentagon spokesman also named a third reason – this is weather:

“The weather also plays a role. It’s the ‘dirty’ season in Ukraine. This part of Ukraine is flat, with a lot of farmland. It’s been described to me a bit like Kansas. But if you think about it, this time of the year in the spring there is just a lot of rain and mud. And it’s also a bit slowed down the Russians.

According to him, the invaders still have not overcome problems of leadership and unit cohesion:

“I mean, we still have anecdotal evidence… of evidence of morale and cohesion problems in many units. There are also leadership problems, poor command and control that they have not resolved. We see that are trying and trying to overcome some of these problems, but it is not at all clear what they have succeeded with.”

In addition, Kirby said that Russia still had “a lot of strength and firepower” left.

“A lot of effort went into continuing this fight. And that’s why we kept saying that this could end up in a protracted battle in the Donbass. And that’s why … we are focused right now every day on making sure that we can give the Ukrainians the tools and the weapons they need, as well as the training they may need with some of these tools to be successful.”

Recall that the British Ministry of Defense said that Russia continues to deploy its troops in the Kharkiv region, and is also trying to advance to the Donbass.
