(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, MAY 10 – The Sri Lankan Defense Minister has issued an order authorizing all security officers to shoot on sight anyone found damaging public property or causing damage.
The decision comes at a time when the President is deploying tens of thousands of soldiers of all corps and police forces on the island at the end of a night and a day of intense tension.
The Colombo newspaper Daily Mirror writes that, according to the police, eight victims of the violence in the last 24 hours, at least 65 houses damaged, 41 of which were burned, and 88 vehicles set on fire.
Those in charge of the capital’s main hospital said they treated 219 injured after yesterday’s clashes.
